tag:Your next customer might never see your Google listing. They'll type "best carry-on under $200 that fits under a seat" into ChatGPT, scroll a visual carousel of products, compare three side by side and click straight through to the store that won the conversation. If that store isn't you, it's your competitor.
ChatGPT shopping has changed a lot in the past year, and plenty of advice floating around is already out of date. Here's what's actually happening right now, and the moves we're making for our ecommerce clients to get their products into those answers.
Let’s go through a very quick history lesson because it matters here!
In September 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout, which let shoppers buy from Etsy sellers without ever leaving ChatGPT (Digital Transactions). Six months later, OpenAI pulled back. In a March 24, 2026 announcement, the company said the first version of Instant Checkout "did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide" and shifted its focus to helping people decide what to buy instead (AI Business).
So today, ChatGPT shopping is all about discovery. Shoppers get visual product results, side-by-side comparisons and the ability to refine by budget, dimensions and preferences, or upload a photo for inspiration. Then they click through and buy on the retailer's own site. Big names like Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot and Wayfair are already feeding product data into ChatGPT through OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol (AI Business).
That's good news for brands! The sale still happens on your site, with your checkout, your upsells and your email capture. Your job is to win the recommendation.
The traffic is small compared to Google, but it's growing fast and it's high quality. Adobe Analytics data from May 2026 showed AI-referred traffic to US retail sites up 138% year over year. Those visitors converted 54% better than non-AI traffic and spent 53% more time on site (Digital Commerce 360). That tracks with what we see for clients: by the time someone clicks over from ChatGPT, they've already done their research and they're more ready to buy.
OpenAI is pretty open about this. According to its help center, ChatGPT shows products it judges relevant to the shopper's request, using structured metadata from merchants and data providers (like price and description), review summaries it builds from public websites, and the context of the conversation. When several merchants sell the same item, they're ranked on factors like availability, price, quality and whether the seller is the maker or primary seller (OpenAI Help Center).
One more important detail: OpenAI says product results are not ads and aren't influenced by partnerships. You can't buy your way into the organic carousel, which means the brands with the best data and the best reputation win. And that means that SEO and GEO are more important than ever for ecommerce.
If you're on Shopify, you're in luck: OpenAI says Shopify merchants' product data is already integrated through Shopify Catalog, no extra work required (OpenAI Help Center). On BigCommerce, Magento, Salesforce Commerce Cloud or a custom build? Apply for direct feed access through OpenAI's commerce program so your products don't rely on whatever ChatGPT can scrape.
OpenAI's product feed spec requires nine fields (ID, title, description, URL, brand, seller name, image, availability and price), but the optional fields are where you pull ahead (OpenAI Product Feed Spec). Fill in GTINs, extra images, dimensions, materials, shipping costs, return windows and review counts. When a shopper asks for "a rug under $300 that's 8x10 with free returns," ChatGPT can only recommend you if that data exists.
The spec is clear that you should update the feed when a sale starts or ends, and when stock changes. Nothing kills a recommendation faster than a shopper clicking through to an out-of-stock page (or a price that doesn't match). Sync your feed with your inventory system, not a spreadsheet someone updates on Fridays.
People talk to ChatGPT the way they'd talk to a store associate: "Is this jacket warm enough for Chicago?" "Will this couch fit through a 30-inch door?" Pack your product descriptions and PDP FAQs with the specifics that answer those questions: use cases, sizing guidance, comparisons to similar products and who it's best for. Bonus: this same copy helps you win Google's AI Overviews too.
ChatGPT builds its review summaries from public websites, so your reputation lives everywhere your products are discussed. Collect product reviews on your site, keep your marketplace listings healthy and respond to customers on review platforms. If you submit ratings in your feed, OpenAI asks that they reflect product reviews, not store reviews.
When someone asks for "the best running shoes for flat feet," ChatGPT leans on the articles, forums and Reddit threads that already answer that question. Digital PR, affiliate partnerships, gifting to reviewers and product placement in trade publications all feed the models. This is where link building and GEO overlap, and it's one of the biggest levers we pull for ecommerce clients. (Do it for the backlinks AND the AI mentions!)
Since ChatGPT considers whether a merchant is the maker or primary seller, your DTC site should be the clear source of truth for your own products. Use consistent product names everywhere, keep your brand site's PDPs more detailed than your reseller listings, and make sure your brand entity (name, logo, About page, social profiles) is consistent across the web.
Product, Offer, AggregateRating and FAQ structured data help every engine understand your pages. The key is consistency: the price, availability and ratings in your schema should match your feed and what's visible on the page. Mixed signals make machines trust you less.
Check your robots.txt and your CDN or firewall settings. OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawler docs). The good news: it's separate from GPTBot, which crawls for AI training. You can allow search visibility and still block training if you prefer.
The checkout happens on your site, so the click from ChatGPT needs to land somewhere great. Fast PDPs, the right variant preselected, clear shipping and return info above the fold and a frictionless mobile checkout. You did the hard work of earning the recommendation; don't lose the sale on a slow page.
Set up a GA4 segment for referrals from chatgpt.com and other AI tools so you can see sessions, conversion rate and revenue. Then use a citation tracker like Scrunch, AirOps or Semrush to monitor a set of shopping prompts in your category, and which competitors show up when you don't.
Mostly no. OpenAI deprioritized Instant Checkout in March 2026. Retailers can still offer checkout inside their own apps in ChatGPT, but most shoppers now click through and buy on the merchant's site (AI Business).
No. OpenAI says product results are not ads and aren't influenced by partnerships (OpenAI Help Center). Ads in ChatGPT are separate from product results.
Your catalog is already connected through Shopify Catalog. What's left is the stuff that makes you win: complete product data, great reviews, off-site mentions and a fast site.
No. OpenAI's spec says eligibility doesn't guarantee display. The feed gets you in the running; relevance, reviews and reputation decide who gets recommended.
It builds on top of it. Clean technical SEO, strong product pages and authority still matter. GEO adds product feeds, off-site mentions and AI citation tracking on top.
